A driver who was sought in connection with an October car accident that killed two teenage bicyclists turned himself in to authorities shortly after the accident, according to a recent article in the Jersey Journal.
The 20-year-old man surrendered to detectives at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Homicide Unit. He was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Authorities claim that the Jersey City man was driving a Nissan Maxima on the city’s Western Slope near Terrace Avenue and Leonard Street when he struck two teenagers, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, who were bicycling at the bottom of the Western Slope.
The 15-year-old was found near the Secaucus Road off-ramp and pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
The 16-year-old was found on the Routes 1&9 northbound roadway below the scene of the accident. Investigators hypothesize that the impact of the accident threw the older teen over a fence, causing him to fall about 30 feet into the roadway. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries.
After the crash, investigators claim that the driver and three passengers in his vehicle left the car at Secaucus Road and fled on foot. Two of them returned to the accident scene, where they were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and then released. The third, a 20-year-old woman from Jersey City, faces charges of hindering an investigation due to her failure to return to the accident scene.
