Galloway Township police arrested an Atlantic City NJ man who was allegedly driving through Galloway with a fully loaded rifle and a small quantity of heroin.
The suspect, a 28-year-old AC resident, was reportedly driving along Route 30 in Galloway Township when a patrol cop saw him commit a traffic violation by changing lanes without signaling. The Galloway patrol officer pulled over the suspect’s car and approached the vehicle. While speaking to the suspect, the police officer reportedly saw a firearm in plain view inside the car.
When the Galloway police officer realized that the suspect might have firearms and drugs in the motor vehicle, he called for backup. The Galloway Township Police Department and the Pleasantville Police Department sent more cops to the scene to assist with the situation.
Galloway police officers conducted a full search of the suspect’s motor vehicle and allegedly found a .556-caliber semiautomatic assault rifle, a .30-caliber special revolver, and a 30-round ammunition magazine. Police also allegedly discovered a package containing five ounces of uncut, pure heroin and a small amount of marijuana.
Police seized the weapons and drugs and arrested the suspect. The suspect was charged with numerous crimes, including illegal possession of an assault rifle, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, possession of heroin, distribution of heroin, and simple possession of marijuana. The suspect was also cited for a number of traffic offenses, including making an unsafe lane change, careless driving, and driving while suspended.
After being taken into police custody, the suspect was moved to the Atlantic County Jail in Mays Landing, New Jersey. Although nonviolent drug offenders are usually able to secure their release from jail without needing to post bail, the weapons charges against the suspect could meant that he is denied bail in advance of trial.
